Left to cherish his memory are his brother-in-law Phil Podavin (Pearl); his loving children; Karen, Micheal (Debbie), Lori (Terry), and Tricia (Paul), his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren; Christa (Jordan), Taylor (Kalvin), Novah, Vehlan Colley-Ann (Colin), Bethany, Kathryn, Lily, Kennedy, Kyle, Kayleigh, Kingston, Derek (Julie) Laila, Lennix, Hailey, Hannah, Harley, Sean (Sheena), Eric (Aurora), Braden (Corrina), Andrew and Chaz (Katie).

Stan was also a proud first time great great grandfather to Bethany’s daughter Stevie-Ann. He also leaves behind nephews; Stan, Ken, Jim Sharp and their families; and his Saskatchewan family, niece Wendy, nephew Jason (Trish) Chernoff and family.

Stan was born in Portage la Prairie in July 1934. He was proud of his Ukrainian and Polish Heritage. The Portage la Prairie community was important to Stan. He married Bernice in 1956 at the First Presbyterian Church. Soon after they started their family of five children. Stan was blessed to be married to his bride Bernice, the love of his life, for over 66 years.

He started his work life in the construction industry, then Campbell Soup, followed by many diverse jobs in Portage la Prairie until attending Red River Community College as a mature student where he graduated as a commercial baker. After graduation he worked at Tasty Bakery for many years until his final retirement job at McCain Foods.

Stan’s life was defined by his love for his family, his faith, exemplary work ethic, integrity, and his unwavering strength he showed battling health issues for both him and his wife. Despite his sometimes gruff exterior, Stan was a deeply caring man with a big heart for the people he loved most.

Stan enjoyed fishing, camping, horse races, the casino, and road trips. He was passionate about a variety of sports and always tried to support the local sports teams first. He was an excellent baker and cook, especially when preparing his favourite ethnic dishes. He was best known for being the “King of Gravy Making”. Truly the best tasting gravy ever!

Our family appreciates all the care he received over the years from Dr. Quesada, Portage General Hospital and more recently from the Lions Prairie Manor. Heartfelt thanks, and gratitude for the care and support provided to Stan and his family by the doctors, nurses, health care aides, activity staff and all other staff at The Lions Manor.

The family is grateful for all the food, flowers, and condolences that we have received. In accordance with his wishes a private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity on one’s choice.
