Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Glenn Milne, 93 years young. Glenn passed peacefully, with his children by his side in Carman Hospital.

Glenn was born in Winnipeg to parents John and Irene Milne. He grew up with his younger brother, Stewart, with whom he shared many early adventures.

Dad maintained an active and adventurous life. He will be remembered for his love of the outdoors and his many recreational pursuits. Swimming and scuba diving were his greatest passions, and he was proud to have taught scuba lessons to hundreds of students in Portage. He loved cross-country skiing in the winter, and biking and kayaking in the summer. There truly wasn’t anything Dad wouldn’t try. We often joked about how many pairs of shoes he wore out on his daily walks. Even as his walks grew shorter in recent years, he continued to “pound the pavement” until his illness made it impossible.

Dad’s adventurous spirit extended far beyond home. He enjoyed many scuba diving expeditions to the Caribbean, where he found joy in the underwater world he loved so much. His travels also took him on unforgettable journeys to New Zealand and Vietnam, experiences he spoke of often. In later years, he treasured his annual visits to Edmonton to spend time with David. He also delighted in two memorable train trips to Whitefish to visit Bobbi-Jo.

Dad worked for the Government of Manitoba for 40 years. He began his Power Engineering career shovelling coal at the Manitoba Developmental Centre and eventually retired as the Chief Engineer at the Women’s Jail Powerhouse. He took great pride in his work and the people he worked alongside.

Family meant everything to Dad, and he passed that value on to all of us. He was a proud father to Linda (Steve) Sigurdson, Ian (Debbie) Milne, Sheila (Gary) Thomas, Dianne (Ron) Nordstrom, and David (Charlotte) Milne, and stepfather to Brenda Irwin, Brent (Helen) Irwin, and Bobbi-Jo (Kevin) Martin. He cherished his grandchildren: Darren (Marielle) Thomas, Jeffrey (Lindsay) Thomas, Taylor Milne (Jill Kaspick, son Remi), Stacy Milne (Paul Lawrence), Madison Martin, Ava Martin, and Kaytrin Irwin.

Dad’s greatest sorrow was the passing of his beloved daughter Sheila Thomas in 2014. He later lost his furry companion and walking partner, Scorgie.

Dad spent the last few months in the Carman Hospital, where he received excellent care. His positivity never wavered. He continually asked for reassurance that his cabin at West Hawk Lake was still booked for our upcoming two-week family camp in July. He spoke often about looking forward to the summer trek to the lake.

We are deeply grateful to his dear friends Dennis Zwarich, Larry Riach, and Doug Morrey for their constant support over the years. They ensured Dad made it to the coffee shop to “give them advice,” attended Tuesday movies, and enjoyed musical concerts. Their visits to him in the hospital brought him great comfort and joy.

Dad will be remembered for his adventurous, funloving spirit, his tall tales, his questionable dance moves, and his unwavering zest for life. It brings us peace to think of him reunited with the friends and family who passed before him, continuing the adventures he loved so much.

In keeping with Dad’s wishes, a private family service will be held at West Hawk Lake in July. For those who wish to honour his memory, donations may be made to the Breast Cancer Canada, 415 Exmouth St., Unit #101, Sarnia, ON N7T 8A4.
