Obituary

Garth passed away peacefully at Douglas Campbell Lodge on February18the, 2026 at the age of 85 years.

He is predeceased by his parents Urban Krastel and Bea Remple, and stepfather Elmer Remple.

He will be greatly missed by his wife April, his children; Sherri Krastel (Mike), Colleen Bassie (Carl), Kelvin (Mary-Ellen). Step-children; Shawneen Davies (Mark), Andrea Salyn (Troy), David Davies (Michelle), along with thirteen grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.  Also, his brother Craig Krastel (Loraine) and sister Dawn-Lynn Madill.

Garth was born in Winnipeg and raised in Morris, Manitoba where he spent his school years. He worked in the mine in Thompson, was a banker in Souris, MB and a lineman with MTS. He then earned his teaching degree at the University of Manitoba and spent most of his teaching career in Portage la Prairie at Yellowquill School, until he retired at the age of 55.

He then took up small home renovations and duct cleaning. He was always busy doing something.

Garth was an easy-going fun-loving guy. He always had a joke or two to tell and truly enjoyed life. He had a passion for sports, playing; football, hockey, basketball, pool, and steel tip darts.

He also coached many sports, enjoyed Taekwondo, and was a Cub and Scout leader. He was a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion Morris branch, as well as the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #65 in Portage la Prairie.

Garth was a big music fan and continuously had tunes going. He knew the lyrics to just about every song, and would often finish a sentence with a line from one. He loved playing his drums and he jammed with many bands in the Portage area, even drumming for Doc Walker.

His favourite times were spent at our cabin at Big Point and then at Lake Seven. He spent many hours

planning and renovating our cabin, building decks and anything else that was needed. He was in his

glory when he was doing this type of work.

Garth’s biggest love was spending time with family and friends. It was very seldom to see Garth without a smile on his face or chuckling about something. He was a very social person; you could lose him in a grocery store, and find him chatting with someone - possibly someone he didn’t even know.

A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor on Saturday, February 21, 2026, starting at 2:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #65 in the Cedar Lounge (downstairs), 275 Duke Avenue, Portage la Prairie.

If you wish to make donations they can be to Alzheimer Society of MB, #10 – 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2, or Royal Canadian Legion Branch 65, 275 Duke Avenue, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 0S5.
