Jo-Anne Smith (nee Anderson) passed away peacefully in the early morning of September 5th, after a brief but fierce battle with cancer, for a third time, at the age of 63 years.

Jo-Anne was born in The Pas, Manitoba to Anna and Douglas Anderson on June 10, 1963. She had many stories from her youth spent on Ralls Island, from outsitting her grandmother over a bowl of cream of wheat, to chasing pigs that escaped, every day after school straight off the bus.

In 1985, she welcomed her first child, Kendra-Ann into the world, followed a couple years later in 1987, by her second child, Alex, while still living in The Pas, MB.

After moving to Selkirk, MB in 1990, she met her husband, Tim Smith in "The Merchant" where he struggled to be the one to get to buy her a drink; they were married October 19, 1991. Her father-in-law frequently boasted that she was his favourite daughter-in-law and they welcomed their third child, Edith, after moving back to The Pas in 1992 and returning to Selkirk in 1994.

Having spent 16 years in Selkirk, they moved to Thompson in 2010 where they remained until their passing.

Jo-Anne had recently retired from Manitoba Hydro (initially Centra Gas prior to amalgamation) after 25 years. She was a 2 time cancer survivor, and in most recent years could be spotted every Friday night helping out with Thompson’s Chase the Ace and Meat draws down at the Thompson Legion.

She was predeceased by her husband, Tim Smith in April 2026, her mother Anna, father Douglas, as well as her sister, Susan.

She leaves behind to mourn her passing, her three children; Kendra-Ann (Tyler) Matthies, Alexander Kolisnyk, and Edith (Mathew) Cormier, her seven grandchildren; Douglas Hay, Jack Burnett, Carson Kolisnyk, Karma Matthies, Timothy Cormier, Paul Kolisnyk and Lilith Cormier, her sister Helen (Bob) Henderson, and brothers; Steve (Cathy) Carnegie and Wayne (Grace) Anderson, as well as nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins too numerous to name.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Thompson Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Thompson Health Auxiliary, CancerCare Manitoba or another charity of your choice would be appreciated.
